The currency.dat configuration contains the exchange rates that the WEBSALE AG Online Service Area uses to combine amounts in different currencies. This is needed mainly in the sales statistics, when a shop sells in several currencies and the report should still show a single total. Don’t maintain the file in the file system. Use the “Statistik (Verkäufe)” service in the Online Service Area instead. There you edit the same values in an input form, and the service checks your entries immediately.
This file only affects the statistics in the Online Service Area. It has no effect on the prices in the shop.If you want to show buyers prices in a second currency, that is a different feature with its own exchange rate file. You set it up in the AlternativeCurrency section of the shop.config.

Structure

The file is located in the shop’s configuration directory and applies to the entire shop, not separately per subshop or language. It is tab-separated. The first line contains the column names, and from the second line on there is one line per currency.
The three columns are identified by their names in the header line, not by their position. The column order is therefore free, but the spelling of the column names is not. If one of the three columns is missing, the file can’t be loaded. This wasn’t documented before and has been added here.

What is checked during loading

The following rules determine whether the Online Service Area accepts your file. None of them was described before, and violating any one of them causes the entire file to be rejected, not just the affected line. The base currency rate must be exactly 1. This is the most common pitfall. The base currency converts to itself, so any other value counts as a configuration error. There must be exactly one base currency. If no line has the x flag, the file is rejected. If several lines have an x, the last of them in the file wins. Don’t rely on this; flag exactly one line. Only digits and the period are allowed in the conversion factor. A comma as decimal separator, a sign, or a space causes the error message “Ungültiger Umrechnungskurs” (invalid exchange rate). Write 1.0875, not 1,0875. The factor 0 is invalid. It would mean a division by zero and is treated like a syntax error.
The Online Service Area only evaluates x or X as the base currency flag. The hyphen in all other lines is a convention that makes the file easier to read, but it isn’t checked. An empty cell would have the same effect.

In the editing form

When you open the service for the first time, the Online Service Area creates the file if none exists in the shop directory yet. It uses the WEBSALE AG default file as a template. So you never start with an empty list. The form shows the base currency separately above the list. The list itself only contains the other currencies with their rates, and below it there are always three empty lines for new currencies. Currency names are converted to uppercase during loading. So it doesn’t matter whether you enter eur or EUR.
