# Directory structure of a shop

> The layout of a WEBSALE shop directory: shop root, templates, configurations, navigation graphics, and product media, and which directories exist per language and subshop.

Every WEBSALE shop lives in a directory tree with fixed names. When you come across paths such as `konfiguration/deutsch/country.dat` or `benutzer/templates` in this documentation, they refer to this tree.

You encounter it in two places: locally on your computer, after the WSPManager has transferred the template shop from the WEBSALE server, and on the server itself when you open it via SFTP. The structure is the same in both cases.

## The tree at a glance

In the following example, the shop ID is `demo`:

```text theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"},"languages":{"custom":["/languages/websale.json"]}}
websale8_shop-demo/
├── $w-wspmanager/
├── benutzer/
│   ├── navigation/
│   │   ├── grafiken/
│   │   └── icons/
│   └── templates/
├── konfiguration/
│   └── deutsch/
└── produkte/
    └── medien/
        ├── bilder/
        ├── flash/
        └── pdf/
```

## The directories in detail

| Directory | Contents |
| - | - |
| `websale8_shop-demo` | the root directory of the shop, the shop root. The name is made up of `websale8_shop-` and your shop ID |
| `$w-wspmanager` | the database the WSPManager uses to manage your product data |
| `benutzer` | main directory for templates as well as navigation graphics and icons |
| `benutzer/navigation/grafiken` | the graphics for the category menu navigation. In the WSPManager, you assign each category its own graphic |
| `benutzer/navigation/icons` | the icons placed in front of a category without its own graphic, a different one for each hierarchy level |
| `benutzer/templates` | the HTML templates |
| `konfiguration` | the configuration files of the shop |
| `konfiguration/deutsch` | the language-dependent configurations |
| `produkte` | main directory for product-specific files |
| `produkte/medien` | images, PDF files, and other media for displaying products |
| `produkte/medien/bilder` | the product images in four sizes |
| `produkte/medien/pdf` | PDF files for the products |

> [!WARNING]
>
> Do not change or delete anything in the `$w-wspmanager` directory. Doing so results in the loss of your product data.

### The four image sizes

The `produkte/medien/bilder` directory contains up to four versions of the same image per product, each in its own subdirectory:

| Subdirectory | Usage |
| - | - |
| `gross` | the large image |
| `normal` | the normal image |
| `klein` | thumbnail for display within a category |
| `mini` | mini thumbnail for lists such as accessory products, replacement products, and recently viewed products |

> [!NOTE]
>
> You can create any additional subdirectories of your own below `produkte/medien` if the predefined ones are not sufficient. The image converter, for example, creates a directory for its transfer files.

## What exists per language and subshop

This is the point most often overlooked when working with paths. Two directories exist not just once, but once per language or subshop. You create additional subdirectories for this in the WSPManager.

| Directory | Contains |
| - | - |
| `konfiguration/<Subshop>` | the language-dependent configuration files, for example `country.dat`, `salutation.dat`, and `title.dat` |
| `benutzer/templates/<Subshop>` | the templates of the respective subshop |

The previous documentation does not mention that the templates are also stored per subshop. The shop sets the template directory to `benutzer/templates/<Subshop>` and offers no setting for it.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The subshop directories are usually named after the language, for example `deutsch`. That is why the documentation refers to the language directory in some places and to the subshop directory in others. Both mean the same thing.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Configuration files that apply to the entire shop are located one level higher, directly under `konfiguration`. Which files these are is stated on the reference page of each file.
>
> Some files are searched for in both places: first in the subshop directory, and if the file is missing there, in `konfiguration`. This way you maintain a shared version and only deviate where necessary.

## Other directories

Individual features bring their own subdirectories that the template shop does not contain out of the box. They are created as soon as you set up the feature.

| Directory | Belongs to |
| - | - |
| `benutzer/templates/css_upload` | the stylesheet files of the shop |
| `benutzer/templates/css_min` | the stylesheets minified by the PageSpeed tool |
| `konfiguration/<Subshop>/inquiry` | the inquiry module |

> [!NOTE]
>
> The `produkte/medien/flash` directory dates from the time when shops used Flash files to display products. Flash is no longer supported by any current browser. The directory no longer has any significance for new shops.
