# Template directories

> The template directories in WEBSALE V8s: the translation directory as the source of all templates and the subshop directories for the translated templates.

In your online shop directory, you will find the templates folder, which contains all available templates provided in the initial delivery state (sample shop) of WEBSALE V8s. Using a simple SFTP client, you can download this folder structure to start implementing your design ideas directly afterwards.

The template directories follow a clear division of labor: in the translation directory you edit the templates, and in the subshop directories the resulting, fully translated templates are stored. The following two sections introduce these directories.

## Translation template directory `benutzer/templates/translation`

The translation folder can be regarded as the source directory of all templates, since all changes to the code of a template are made in this directory.

Once a template has been changed, the changes only take effect in the shop after the following steps have been carried out:

* Uploading the changed file to the shop server via SFTP
* "Translating" (clicking the globe icon) using the text maintenance platform in the Online Service Area

> [!TIP]
>
> Even if you currently use only one subshop, we recommend editing in the translation folder and using the text maintenance platform. "Translating" via text maintenance transfers the templates from the translation directory to the respective subshop directory.

All templates in the translation directory contain the text variables of the text maintenance platform.

For more information, see Fundamentals of texts and languages (text maintenance).

## Subshop template directory `benutzer/templates/<Subshop-ID>`

For each subshop, a corresponding folder must be created on the server under benutzer/templates/, with exactly the same name as the subshop ID. So if your subshop ID is "Deutsch", the folder under benutzer/templates/ must also be called "Deutsch". Please pay attention to upper and lower case.

The subshop template directory contains the subshop templates that are produced by the "translation" process of the text maintenance platform. They are therefore a copy of the translation templates. However, instead of the text variables, they now contain the texts that you have stored in the text maintenance platform for each language and for each subshop.

> [!WARNING]
>
> After this first copy process, the subshop templates should no longer be touched by the designer. Any changes to templates made in this directory will be overwritten without warning the next time you "translate" via the text maintenance platform in the Online Service Area.

For more information, see Fundamentals of texts and languages of a shop.

All templates contain graphics, product images, videos, CSS includes, and so on. Such elements are written in HTML as a reference (link) to a corresponding base (source). In WEBSALE V8s, the base for all relative references is the subshop template directory.

For more information, see Base element.
